Copper Canyon is actually not a single canyon, but rather a series of more than 20 canyons running through the northern region of Mexico. The canyon covers over 20,000 square miles and is four times larger than the Grand Canyon in the United States.

The scenery is breathtaking, the railroad line through the mountains impressive; and you will have a chance to see and learn something about the unassimilated Tarahumara Indians who live in the canyon.

Getting There
Although accessible by a dirt road through the mountains, the canyon is more comfortably visited by train.

For a scenic journey through the heart of Copper Canyon, board a train in Los Mochis at 7:00 a.m. central time. That way you can enjoy the view between El Fuerte and Creel during daylight hours.

Your Choice of Trains
You can weave through the canyons on two main train lines which offer tours along the Chihuahua-Pacifico rail line: the Chihuahua al Pacifico, and the more lavish South Orient Express.

The Chihuahua al Pacifico train is the main line on the route and provides cars that are comfortable and climate controlled. You can eat in the dining car, or you can purchase food from the vendors at each stop.

The South Orient Express, with its turn-of-the-century design and appointments, is considered the finest of tours along the route.
